…is none other than Justin Duchscherer of the Oakland A’s.
Or “Justin Duck-sher” if you’re a SportsCenter anchor. Or just “Duke” if you don’t know how to spell it. Either way, the pronunciation and/or spelling of his name isn’t important to this discussion. All I want to talk about today is the fact that he kicks ass.
By reaching 77 innings pitched on the season in yesterday’s win, Duchscherer is now eligible for the ERA title, and if the season ended today, he’d have it over Cliff Lee by almost a half run. Justin’s ERA is 1.99. One point freaking nine nine!
All this without touching 90 on the radar gun, and, before the start of this season, not starting a game since 2003. We knew he was a good reliever when healthy, but after missing most of last season due to injury, did we really expect this?
His 8-4 record is far less sexy than Lee’s 10-1 – and who the hell is he, anyway – so I doubt he’s a candidate to be the second A in a row to start the All-Star game. Still, he should be the A’s (lone?) representative at the mid-summer classic.
That would make him a two-time All Star. I admit, I thought it was a little funny the first time around, but I’m not laughing at the prospect anymore.
