The A’s are 19-16 this season when Yoenis Cespedes plays. They are 7-18 when he does not play.
I know that Cespedes couldn’t have stopped Brian Fuentes from giving up a three-run bomb to end Friday’s game. And he couldn’t have made the umpires make better calls in yesterday’s loss to the D’Backs. But 60 games in, I think it’s safe to say that this team really needs the presence of Cespedes in the lineup to click. I don’t think it was a coincidence that an unlikely three out of four from Texas came when #52 was penciled into the lineup.
The extremely athletic Cespedes has missed time to injury twice now this season. First there was the hand injury that sidelined him for nearly a month. Now it’s a strained hamstring suffered in Thursday’s game that has kept him on the bench for the weekend. Hopefully this is just bad luck and not the beginning of a trend with him.
